On the 40th anniversary of the disappearance of Raoul Wallenberg, President Reagan praised the Swedish diplomat’s efforts in saving the lives of nearly 100,000 Jews in World War II and called on the Soviet Union to give “a full and complete accounting of his fate.” Wallenberg, serving in Budapest, helped to save Hungarian Jews from Nazi death camps. He disappeared Jan. 17, 1945, after being taken away by Soviet soldiers. Moscow says he died in prison a few years later, but reports from former Soviet prisoners have indicated that he may still be alive.
