Iraq Reports Hitting 3 Vessels in Persian Gulf
Iraqi jet fighters attacked three ships near Iran’s Kharg Island oil terminal in the Persian Gulf on Monday, an Iraqi military communique said.
The communique said “two large naval targets and a medium-sized naval target were attacked by our eagles (pilots)” in two raids. The Iraqis designate oil tankers as “large naval targets” and describe freighters as “medium-size naval targets.”
There was no immediate confirmation of the attacks from gulf shipping sources in Bahrain and Dubai.
Iraq declared a naval blockade against Iran last January to cut Iran’s oil export income. The two countries have been at war since September, 1980.
