A stick of dynamite blew up aboard a Bolivian airliner bound for Miami, killing a passenger who had strapped the explosive to his waist, police said Thursday.

The pilot landed the damaged plane safely Wednesday night at Santa Cruz airport, 324 miles east of La Paz. No other injuries were reported.

Stewardesses aboard the Lloyd Aereo Boliviana flight said that five minutes before the Boeing 727 was scheduled to land at Santa Cruz airport, a man carrying a suitcase entered a lavatory. Seconds later an explosion shook the plane and tossed the man out of the lavatory and into the aisle. The rear part of the plane was heavily damaged. Police identified the dead man as Armando Guerra Perez, 50, of Coripata, 69 miles north of La Paz.
