New Caledonians marked their first day in two weeks without a curfew as the French Parliament debated whether to extend emergency measures imposed to quell violence in its South Pacific territory that was triggered by independence-seeking Kanaks, a Melanesian race related to Australia’s aborigines. France’s Socialist government won approval in the National Assembly to extend the curfew and other measures until the end of June, but the move must still be approved by the Senate. Meanwhile, New Caledonians flocked to bars and cafes to celebrate their first night without a 9 p.m. curfew.
