The Syrian Parliament has nominated President Hafez Assad for a third term and set Feb. 10 as the date of a national referendum to elect him without opposition.

The action, taken unanimously as Parliament wound up a two-day meeting Monday night, follows the recommendation by Syria’s ruling Baath Party that Assad be nominated to serve another seven-year term.

Assad, a former air force pilot, seized power in Syria in 1970 and was elected to the presidency the following year. He was reelected to a second term in 1978, receiving 99.6% of the vote as the only candidate on the ballot.
