Soviet Defector Reported in Manila

MANILA —
A Soviet official who arrived in Manila two weeks ago to take part in an exhibition of chemical products has disappeared and is believed to have defected, Philippine government sources said Monday.
The sources said that the official, Vladimir Ivanov, who was part of a six-man delegation, had established contact with the U.S. Embassy in Manila to seek political asylum. He is believed to have left Manila on a Lufthansa flight on Jan. 21.
