U.S. Woman Wins Giant Slalom

B-team member Diann Roffe raced a daring second run to score a sensational victory today in the women’s giant slalom and give the United States its first gold medal at the World Alpine Ski Championships.

Roffe, a 17-year-old from Williamson, N.Y., was fifth after the first run with a time of 1 minute, 9.18 seconds, and clocked a time of 1:09.35 in the second for a winning aggregate of 2:18.53. Elisabeth Kirchler of Austria won the silver and Eva Twardokens of Squaw Valley, Calif., the bronze.
