Family Service of Long Beach presented its 1985 Family Life Awards to philanthropist Isabel Patterson, prizefighter Sugar Ray Robinson and author Irving Stone and his wife, editor Jean Stone at Family Service’s 51st anniversary dinner Jan. 25.

Sandra Lunt of Whittier, co-editor of the Rio Hondo College student newspaper El Paisano, has won a $200 scholarship from the Pacific Coast Press Club.

George Verhoeven was selected Citizen of the Year by the Artesia Chamber of Commerce. Verhoeven has owned a business in Artesia for 44 years and has been active with the Artesia Christian Home for the Aged, YMCA, youth baseball, Bellflower Christian Schools and the Rotary Club.

Jeannie Lin, a senior in visual communications design at Cal State Long Beach, has won a design competition sponsored by the McDonnell Douglas Corp. A design by Lin will represent McDonnell Douglas’ Project Love, which provides Christmas gifts to Indian children in New Mexico and Arizona.

Eighteen members of the Jewish Community Center of Long Beach received the Chai Volunteer Award for extraordinary service to the center at its 36th annual meeting. It was presented to Sam Fisher, Shelly Fradin, Seymour Gates, Mitzi Gitlin, Eve Grant, Harry Grant, Bob Greenberg, Millie Greenberg, Ann Horn, Hy Horn, Dolly Jacobson, Pat Lemmerman, Barbara Lieberman, Phyllis Metzger, Gail Nester, Jean Schneider, Linda Vogel and Bea Webber.

The Presidents’ Founders Award, given to the individual who has provided exemplary leadership to the center, was awarded to Toby Rothschild. The Paul Hillinger Youth Award was presented to Marc Kulkin and Bella Solomon received the Stanley Goldin Senior of the Year Award.

At the annual meeting, Jessie Butler was elected and installed as president of the center.

Matthew Callahan has joined the staff of the Downey Library as literacy coordinator, managing the READ adult literacy program (Reading Education for Adults in Downey). READ is free and open to those age 16 and older.

Claudette Powers, a fourth-grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School, has been appointed a mentor teacher by the Paramount school district Board of Education. As a mentor teacher, Powers will help other teachers with classroom techniques, teaching strategies and goals.

Pattie Gracely, an employee of Petrolane Transport in Signal Hill, has been named 1984 Oilwoman of the Year by the Desk and Derrick Club of Long Beach. The club is for women employed in the petroleum industry.

Richard Jones of La Mirada, chairman of Biola University’s education department for 17 years, has been appointed by Gov. George Deukmejian to a four-year term on the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

Michael Rupert of Lakewood has been accepted as a volunteer Big Brother with Big Brothers of Greater Los Angeles.

Mark J. Bruce has been named administrator of Norwalk Community Hospital. Bruce, who first served as Norwalk’s administrator in 1979, returns there after a two-year appointment at West Hollywood Hospital.

Dr. Ronald H. Hartman has been been elected chief of staff at Doctors Hospital of Lakewood for the second consecutive year. Hartman, an ophthalmologist, has practiced in Lakewood for 20 years.

Dr. John Uphold has been appointed director of the emergency department at Beverly Hospital in Montebello.
