City officials today started enforcing a 49-year-old ordinance banning masseurs and masseuses from putting their fingers on people of the opposite sex.

James Reid, head of Boston’s Department of Inspectional Services, said city inspectors were visiting every licensed masseur, including those in such prestigious establishments as the Ritz-Carlton Hotel and the University Club, to make sure they comply with the law.

Once all licensed masseurs have been visited, the department will attempt to check out unlicensed practitioners, he said.

The crackdown is in response to complaints by the anti-pornography group Morality in Media.
