Nepal’s Press Complains on U.S. Aid Plan
Nepal’s state-owned press complained Friday about President Reagan’s proposed 1986 aid package for the kingdom, describing it as puzzling.
The official English-language newspaper, the Rising Nepal, said the increase of “a mere $1.3 million” to $17.5 million for the fiscal year beginning in October, 1985, is “most nominal.”
The newspaper, which normally reflects official thinking, said although India’s aid allocation slumped from $212 million to $178.9 million, Nepal’s “hardly shines in comparison with corresponding figures for other South Asian countries.”
The newspaper said former Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger, during his visit last month to the kingdom, “publicly admitted” that the level of U.S. aid to Nepal was low compared to other countries in the region.
