A 19-year-old youth described by authorities as a “combat-commando freak” was sentenced to 26 years to life in state prison for cutting his foster mother’s throat with a knife. Michael S. McKinney, regarded as very bright with an IQ of 135, claimed his foster father, Quentin McKinney, had committed the slaying, but jurors didn’t believe him and convicted the youth of first-degree murder. McKinney, a former computer science freshman at Loyola Marymount University, was convicted of slitting the throat of Betty McKinney, 61, in their South-Central Los Angeles home.
