Hawaii’s bank examiner, Donna Tanoue, on Friday ordered Coast Savings & Loan Assn. of Los Angeles to stop advertising in Honolulu newspapers. The ads that began Jan. 17 featured money-market rates that are higher than those offered by Hawaiian S&Ls.; Tanoue said state law prohibits out-of-state S&Ls; from doing business or advertising in Hawaii. Tanoue’s order called for Coast to refund deposits generated by the ads. It also said Coast must bear the cost of early-withdrawl penalties.
