Storms Keep Much of U.S. Under Wraps
Storms pushed gale-force winds, freezing rain and snow into Western states today, threatening some with avalanches and closing roads from Washington to Colorado. Snow covered the Midwest and freezing rain pounded the Ohio Valley.
The Pacific storm prompted winter storm warnings for heavy snow in the mountains of Oregon, Washington, the Idaho panhandle and north-central Idaho.
In Illinois, three people were killed in weather-related accidents. At least 12 people, including four who died in traffic accidents in Iowa and two who died of hypothermia in Chicago, died during the weekend.
The National Weather Service issued a warning for winds up to 50 m.p.h. along the Oregon coast, and a travelers’ advisory was in effect for 8 inches of snow in the Cascades and Siskiyous.
Highway 140 in southeastern Oregon was closed between Adel and the Nevada line because of snow drifts.
Avalanche Danger
Rain drenched western Washington and snow at the higher elevations forced the closure of the state’s major transmountain highway because of heavy avalanche danger.
