Landlords packed a meeting room in West Hollywood’s Plummer Park for a hearing on the amount of rents they can charge once tenants vacate their apartments. Landlords at the hearing argued against controls on what can be charged once tenants give up an apartment under rent control. The hearing was one of a series being held by the new city of West Hollywood before a rent-control ordinance is passed. City Council members, who are all renters, were swept into office Nov. 6 on a pro-rent-control platform. Since taking office, the council has frozen rents pending passage of a new ordinance.
