Four Palestinian Factions Condemn Action by Arafat
Four Damascus-based Palestinian guerrilla groups Tuesday strongly condemned an agreement between Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Jordan’s King Hussein on a joint approach to Middle East peace.
“This move will encourage King Hussein to conclude a capitulatory settlement at the expense of Palestinian rights,” Nayef Hawatmeh, leader of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, said.
He described the agreement, announced Monday in Amman, Jordan, as a “flagrant departure” from Palestine National Council resolutions, adding, “This agreement is not binding on the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization) or any of its fighting groups.”
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine said the accord “reflects the persistence of the deviationists (Arafat and his supporters) in destroying the PLO.”
The Saika group described the agreement as treason, saying it “betrays the goals of Palestinian armed struggle.”
The Palestine Popular Struggle Front said the agreement constitutes a “big threat not only to the Palestine cause but to the entire Arab struggle.”
The four groups are among several Syrian-based PLO factions opposed to Arafat’s leadership.
