Australia, Canada, U.S. Plan Exercise

CANBERRA, Australia —
Australia, the United States and Canada will hold a naval exercise early next month to replace one called off because of New Zealand’s ban on visits by nuclear-armed or nuclear-powered ships, Defense Minister Kim Beazley said today.
New Zealand will not take part in exercise Flying Fish, but Australia and New Zealand will hold a separate exercise later in March, Beazley said. He said he believed that two conventionally powered U.S. ships will take part, and will enter the port of Brisbane after the exercise.
