A Manila newspaper published by the Philippines ambassador to Washington criticized U.S. Undersecretary of State Michael H. Armacost for a speech supporting U.S. efforts to promote political reforms in the nation. “It is one thing to offer advice to us; it is another to meddle,” said the Times Journal in an unusual front-page editorial referring to Armacost’s speech in New York on Jan. 29. The newspaper is published by Benjamin Romualdez, brother of first lady Imelda Marcos. Armacost was ambassador to the Philippines from 1982 to 1984.
