EIR Favors Air Wing Move to Point Mugu

An environmental impact report says the proposed relocation of the Air National Guard’s 146th Tactical Wing from Van Nuys to the Pacific Missile Test Center and the Naval Air Station at Point Mugu near Camarillo would have virtually no effect on noise levels.

The move has been opposed by residents of the Leisure Village community at the eastern end of Camarillo, with some support from the Camarillo City Council pending study of the environmental report. The residents claim that the Air National Guard’s relocation would create “unbearable noise and increase air pollution.”

The 300-page report, prepared by PRC Engineering Inc., indicates that Point Mugu is preferred to sites at Palmdale and at Norton Air Force Base near San Bernardino.

The wing is now based at Van Nuys Airport, but the city of Los Angeles would like it to move because it is surrounded by a crowded residential area.

The Air National Guard would occupy a 239-acre site along the northern edge of Pacific Coast Highway, and air guard planes would use a flight path similar to that used by the naval air station.
