For those high on tech comes the first edition of Who’s Who in Frontier Science and Technology (Marquis Who’s Who, Chicago: $84.50). The area covered is defined as “new directions in traditional fields of research, such as genetic engineering”--in this world, anything that predates 1980 is traditional--and “work using the most advanced technology, like lasers and computers.” Selections were based on “current reference value,” meaning these are the North Americans you might need to know about, even though most are now anonymous outside their field. An exception: “Armstrong, Neil A. . . . subspecialties: Astronautics, 1st man to walk on moon, 1969.” Now, that’s specialization.
