A former police officer who was disabled in an assault by three bar patrons will receive $275,000 from the bar owner in a settlement of the case, which cited a 111-year-old law. John N. Kane, who was forced to retire from the New York City police force because he sustained permanent disfigurement, had sued the owner of a Long Island bar for $2 million under the state Dram Shop Act. The statute says bar owners can be held responsible for the illegal acts of drunk customers.
