Ninety-one children fathered by U.S. servicemen during the Vietnam War left Vietnam on Thursday on their first step to new homes in the United States. The children, accompanied by 146 Vietnamese relatives, arrived in Bangkok on a regularly scheduled Air France flight from Ho Chi Minh City.

After seven to 10 days of processing in the Thai capital, most of the Amerasians and their relatives will be sent to the Philippines for four to 15 weeks of English-language training and then to the United States, where they will be resettled by humanitarian organizations.

Thursday’s flight brought the total departures to 2,114 children and 2,686 relatives.
