‘Ziggurat’: A Place for the Homeless

It is sad to note in your article on the homeless that 4,000 to 6,000 people are homeless each night in Orange County (“How Many Are Among the Homeless?” Feb. 17).
A solution might be to convert the almost-empty Chet Holifield “Ziggurat” into a shelter in Laguna Niguel for these unfortunate people. In fact, the huge building could undoubtedly accommodate all of the homeless in Los Angeles, too.
There are acres and acres of unused floor space in this federally owned structure nestled in a valley among the hills of Niguel. Within walking distance is a large public park with a lake. The air is relatively clean and the atmosphere quite tranquil.
The people of Laguna Niguel are generous in their support to save goats, whales and the starving in far-off Africa. I am sure they will welcome the opportunity to provide food and shelter for their less fortunate fellow Americans.
