Jamaica Takes Action to Curb Drug Traffic

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaican government has placed four local airfields under military control in an effort to crack down on the island’s multimillion-dollar drug traffic, the government announced Saturday.
The Ministry of Public Utilities and Transport said the fields will no longer be available for use by civilian aircraft except with the consent of the military chief of staff.
The island is the third-largest supplier of illicit marijuana to the United States, with last year’s crop estimated by the report at 3,000 metric tons, up from 2,440 in 1983.
