Soviet pianist Andrei Gavrilov and his wife have applied for permission to stay in Britain, the government said Thursday.

Gavrilov, 29, the 1974 winner of the prestigious Tchaikovsky prize, flew to Britain last month to record piano works by Chopin.

A government spokeswoman said it could be a week before a decision is made on the application from the pianist and his wife, Natalie.
