Reagan to Give Up Rare Steak, Orange Juice Till New Tests

President Reagan will be eating more fiber and doing without rare steaks and orange juice for a while to help doctors do further tests on his medical condition.

His doctors said Monday that they had discovered blood in his stool and a new, non-cancerous lesion in his lower intestine during an examination last week. (Story on Page 4.)

Presidential spokesman Larry Speakes said that Reagan’s exam showed “mixed results” and that further testing is needed, hence Reagan’s being put on a mildly restrictive diet designed to aid in the accuracy of further testing.

Red meat could be one source of blood in a patient’s stool, experts said. And acidic substances, such as aspirin and the Vitamin C in such foods as oranges, are eliminated when possible before testing to remove any effects they might have on bleeding.
