Local News in Brief : Interfaith Council Seeks to Acquire Motel for Homeless

Share

The board of directors of the Valley Interfaith Council voted Wednesday to apply for about $250,000 in grants to purchase a North Hollywood motel that would provide temporary housing for the homeless.

The council hopes to buy the 77-unit Fiesta Motor Hotel at 7843 Lankershim Blvd., executive director Avanelle Smith said. The council now rents 25 units in the motel for temporary housing under a federal program.

The agency will apply for money to buy the motel under a $5-million program for the homeless recently adopted by the state Legislature.

Should the application be approved, the motel would be refurbished and the agency would provide security guards, a manager and day and night supervisor, staff member Michael Bodaken said.

Clients would receive employment counseling, medical and psychiatric screening, and grant eligibility services, Bodaken said.
