Pregnant women need foods rich in calcium, iron, and folic acid, as well as vitamins B-12 and B-6, according to Cornell University’s Cooperative Extension Program.

Citing Food and Drug Administration information, the researchers state that dietary supplements can be prescribed for pregnant women who are not eating enough foods rich in these nutrients.

However, the researchers also warn that supplements should only be given by a doctor, since large, unsupervised doses of certain vitamins and minerals can lead to fetal defects rather than prevent them.
