Korean Papers Get Warning From Court

Share

Two Korean newspapers and a local tour bureau were ordered by a Superior Court judge not to contact Korean Airlines in any way that could be construed as threatening or to publish defamatory or libelous stories.

A civil suit filed by the airline alleges that derogatory and defamatory articles were published in the weekly Liberty Times after the line terminated its agreement with Universal Tour Bureau.

The suit further alleges that the paper’s editor, who also owns Universal, paid or promised to pay the editor of the Korean Sunday Journal to threaten to print unsavory stories unless the tour bureau was reinstated.

A lawyer for the defendants said none of the allegations is true.

In the order, Judge John L. Cole, stopped short of forbidding the papers to publish anything about the airline or its officers, saying that would be unconstitutional prior restraint.
