Sudan to Revise Some Islamic Verdicts
President Jaafar Numeiri on Saturday accused Libya and Iran of supporting the banned opposition group Muslim Brotherhood. Numeiri also announced that all verdicts issued by courts formerly controlled by members of the brotherhood, a fundamentalist Muslim group, would be revised.
Numeiri said in a speech that Libyan aid to the group was disclosed in talks between an envoy of Libyan leader Moammar Kadafi and a Sudanese ambassador in Europe. He said Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini had urged Kadafi to support the Muslim Brotherhood, and he charged that Iran had provided the group with arms.
Speaking to the central leadership of the Sudanese Socialist Union, the nation’s only legal party, Numeiri accused the brotherhood of using Islamic laws to spread what he called an atmosphere of injustice and intimidation.
Numeiri’s decision to revise some sentences, which have included amputations and floggings, could be an attempt to lessen criticism of his Islamic regime in the West.
