Paralyzed Youth Shot by Goetz Shows Gains

NEW YORK — The condition of Darrell Cabey, one of four youths shot by Bernhard H. Goetz on a Manhattan subway train, continues to improve, and he is now able to speak “some words and sentence fragments,” his attorney’s associate said Saturday.
“We’re all amazed at the progress he’s making,” said Ronald Kuby, who works with attorney William Kunstler.
But Cabey, shot in the back by Goetz on Dec. 22, is permanently paralyzed and has some brain damage, a St. Vincent’s Hospital spokesman said in Manhattan.
Cabey, 19, of the Bronx, was in a coma for more than a month. The other three youths have recovered.
Kuby said doctors consider Cabey’s condition to be improving because “at first they thought he would never talk again.”
