City planners have tabled for the moment plans to construct a controversial subway line through the heart of historic Mexico City, a transportation planner said last week.

Gerardo Ferrando Bravo, director of the Mass Transportation System, told El Universal newspaper that money appropriated for the subway line that is to run under the central plaza, or “Zocalo,” will be spent on another line to cross the western edge of the city from north to south.
