New York’s 36,000 bus and subway workers have called off a strike threatened for today, their union chief said, as state legislators approved a bill on binding arbitration favored by workers. “There won’t be any strike,” said John Lawe, president of Local 100 of the Transport Workers Union, which represents workers in the nation’s largest public transit system. Transit authorities have offered a 2% salary increase for each year of a three-year contract but is asking for cuts in differentials.
