Redondo Beach
A proposal from an Arizona-based firm to provide “trackless trolley” service in the city as early as next month was enthusiastically received Monday night by the City Council.
The council unanimously approved a motion to forward the proposal by American Trolley Lines to the city attorney and the city manager for a study of how the service could be started.
David Shumway, president of American Trolley Lines, said his firm chose Redondo Beach as one of four Southern California cities for the service. Shumway said he plans to operate two 30-passenger buses designed to look like trolley cars.
He said the service would operate between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and would cost 50 cents a ride. A tentative route that would include King Harbor, Riviera Village and the Galleria shopping mall has been selected, he said.
City officials said the council could not approve the service until it decided whether Shumway would be allowed to operate the buses with a business license or under a more complicated franchise. Shumway asked that his service be exempted from franchise requirements.
City Atty. Gordon Phillips said he would need two weeks to review the proposal and make a recommendation to the City Council.
