Artificial heart recipient William J. Schroeder will be released Saturday from the hospital where he has lived since he received the mechanical device Nov. 25, an official said Wednesday.

Schroeder, 53, will ride in his customized van at 2 p.m. from Humana Hospital Audubon to an apartment across the street, said Robert Irvine, Humana Inc. director of public relations.

The patient has been recovering from strokes he suffered last December. The decision to discharge him was made by implant surgeon William C. DeVries, Irvine said.

The apartment where Schroeder and his wife, Margaret, will live has been renovated by Humana for artificial heart patients.

Doctors originally planned to release Schroeder on Feb. 14, his birthday, but scrapped that plan because of his persistent fever and flu-like symptoms.

Since then, Schroeder has regained his strength and resumed wheelchair rides around the hospital. He also has taken several brief trips around the city in his van.
