The leader of America’s Roman Catholic bishops vowed today that critics won’t silence religious voices on political issues, and he illustrated his point by taking a new slap at officials who see Central America as a battleground for world powers.

Bishop James Malone of Youngstown, Ohio, also said that no military solution to problems in the region--into which the Reagan Administration has channeled considerable military aid--”is either possible or desirable.” Malone, president of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, made his remarks in a speech to the annual convention of the American Society of Newspaper Editors.
