China has begun issuing credit cards, and a few hundred Chinese shoppers now can buy goods on credit.

A spokeswoman at the Bank of China in the Zhuhai special economic zone said the branch began issuing credit cards last month and that about 400 customers are using them.

“The card is good only in the special economic zone, and about 20 stores and restaurants accept it. But so far the response has been very good,” she said.

Zhuhai, in southern China, is one of four special economic zones set up in 1979 to attract foreign technology and investment.

The spokeswoman said: “We are learning from Hong Kong. The credit card is a part of it.”
