IRS to Keep Help Lines Open on Weekend

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service decided Friday to keep its toll-free telephone numbers open through the weekend and later than usual on Monday, the deadline for filing income tax returns.
The toll-free numbers, listed on Page 40 of the tax instruction booklet sent to each taxpayer, will be staffed from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. local time today and Sunday. On Monday, the telephone numbers will be answered until 6:30 p.m.
The IRS staff members working on the weekend will answer only general tax filing questions, not specific inquiries about whether refunds are on the way, an IRS spokesman said.
