Reagan Policy in Nicaragua

Share

I would like to applaud your editorial (April 7), “Wish-Dream in Nicaragua.” It is time the true aggressor in Central America be exposed.

The Reagan Administration since coming to power has made no secret of its desire to see the Sandinistas overthrown. In 1981 the need to pressure the Nicaraguan government was because the Sandinistas were allegedly shipping arms to rebels in El Salvador. Since not one bullet has been interdicted on the way from Nicaragua to El Salvador, the Administration had to abandon this line of rhetoric. Now we are told that the Nicaraguans are Marxist-Leninists, bent on expansionism. The Administration never bothers to explain how an economy that leaves 50% of production in private hands qualifies as Marxist-Leninist.

The Administration has continually made baseless charges against the Sandinista government in order to enlist the support of Americans. When challenged to prove these allegations, it has failed miserably. It is time for the United States to let Nicaragua decide its own fate. To borrow from President Reagan, “Let Nicaragua be Nicaragua.”
