VATICAN CITY — Pope John Paul II has accepted the resignations of two U.S. auxiliary bishops, the Vatican announced Tuesday.
Bishop Nicholas Elko, auxiliary to the archbishop of Cincinnati, resigned because of old age. On Dec. 14 he turned 75, the age at which Roman Catholic prelates are required to resign.
Bishop George E. Lynch, 68, auxiliary to the bishop of Raleigh, N.C., resigned apparently for health reasons.
