Soviet Embassy personnel are suspected of having traded tax-free Scotch whisky for Western stereo sets in an apparent illegal smuggling case, police said Tuesday.

Police and customs officials said a passerby saw boxes of Scotch being unloaded from a car outside a radio and television store in the southern suburb of Botkyrka on Saturday.

“The car turned out to be registered with the Soviet Embassy,” Huddinge police superintendent Tage Jarpsten said.

Police raided the store Monday and found about 30 one-liter bottles of Scotch, he said, adding that the 58-year-old shopkeeper admitted he received the liquor as payment by Soviet Embassy personnel for stereo sets.
