A San Diego man booked into County Jail on Wednesday on suspicion of petty theft was found hanging from his cell’s fire sprinkler Thursday morning, coroner’s officials reported.

Edward M. Lancaster, 26, an unemployed plumber, reportedly told family members Wednesday that he intended to take his life, Deputy Coroner George Dicason said.

Dicason said that, on Wednesday evening, Lancaster slashed his arm in a suicide attempt, was transported to UC San Diego Medical Center for treatment, then was returned to an isolation cell in the jail.

Jail authorities said they checked Lancaster’s condition every 30 minutes and discovered him hanging from his bandages. Lancaster was rushed back to UCSD Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
