An Ideology That Focuses on No. 1

Share

Fear struck in my heart once again when I read the views of Gardner.

As a retired special education instructor, I have cheered the gains made in the education of handicapped people in the last 50 years. In recent time we have achieved federal guarantees through law that handicapped people would have educational opportunities. Now in the insensitive remarks of Gardner I sensed a reactionary viewpoint that could influence many uninformed people. If these thoughts reflect a wave of the future in favor of withdrawing support by persons who think the way Gardner does, then I am fearful once more for our special people.

Your paper reported on these events during the week in which Gardner was both hired and basically fired. She resigned under pressure from members of Congress and special education groups. I hope this sort of thing won’t happen again!
