Harold Brown, former secretary of defense and former president of Caltech in Pasadena, has been appointed to the institute’s board of Trustees. Brown, who served as defense secretary under former President Jimmy Carter, also is chairman of Johns Hopkins Univeristy’s Foreign Policy Institute. Also named to the Caltech board was Harry Conger, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Homestake Mining Co. of San Francisco.

Dale Salwak, professor of English at Citrus college in Glendora, has been awarded a fellowship by the National Endowment for the Humanities to study and research British author Kingsley Amis in England this summer. Salwak, who did his doctoral dissertation on Amis, began the research 12 years ago.

Richard P. Knerr, retired co-chairman of the board of Wham-O Manufacturing Co., has been reappointed to the county Fish and Game Commission by Supervisor Pete Schabarum. Knerr lives in Arcadia.
