LACQUER LUXURY

Lacquer, currently much in vogue in the furniture industry, is certainly not a new finishing process. But the ways in which lacquer is applied--plus the special colors and finishes that are being formulated (by both American and European manufacturers)--are making industry-wide news and are being well received by consumers interested in new ideas for interior furbishings. The collection of tables by Salem House, above, consists of a console and cocktail and lamp tables. Black-lacquered frames support mirrored tops that are trimmed in brass. Also by Salem House are the lacquered chairs, right: The design with a triple-arched back is known as the “paper clip” chair, and the one beside it has a lacquered frame and upholstered seat and back. Both the base and top of the side table in black glass and brass, above left, swivel so that the table can service a broader area than traditional small tables. The “petals” of the cocktail table top, above right, fan out to display movable lacquered wedges of black, gray and cream, and wavy stripes of those same colors.
