The government says China’s growth rate last year was 10.81 per thousand, close to the target for containing its population at 1.2 billion by the end of the century.

The figure was reported last week by Wang Wei, minister of the state Family Planning Commission, at the start of a six-day Asian regional conference on women, population and development, according to the official New China News Agency.

The 18-nation meeting in Peking is sponsored by the United Nations fund for population activities.
