Bandits Take $8 Million in N.Y. Holdup
Four armed men broke through a wall and overpowered guards at a Wells Fargo terminal early today, then fled in an armored truck with about $8 million in cash, leaving another $12 million behind, police said.
The record for a cash robbery in the United States is $11 million, also from an armored car company.
The four men, armed with handguns, stole the truck from the company’s garage in lower Manhattan at about 1:30 a.m., said police spokesman Sgt. Ed LeSchack.
Guards Held at Gunpoint
The thieves ordered four armed guards at gunpoint to open a vault where the money was held, then handcuffed the men to a hand truck and loaded the cash into the van, according to Robert Johnston, chief of operations for the Police Department.
The guards “were told they weren’t going to be hurt” if they cooperated, Johnston said.
The van was found empty and abandoned several hours later beneath the Brooklyn Bridge, a few miles away, LeSchack said.
