Berkeley Mayor Gus Newport and Broadway star Whoopi Goldberg were among 12 people arrested during two anti-apartheid demonstrations outside University Hall, the Berkeley headquarters of the University of California system. Meanwhile, university officials have banned four protesters from the Berkeley campus for two weeks because they are accused of having violently resisted university efforts to remove posters taped to the front of Sproul Hall, where about 100 demonstrators remained camped out for the 19th day. The only student banned, Stephen Doig, appealed the action and was allowed back on campus, but only to attend classes and use the library.
