A Depressing Day’s Reading

According to your editorial, Americans want “straight talk” from President Reagan. They “want something more than just standing tall amid missiles or Olympic gold medals or the shambles of domestic programs that help people.”

Is that a fact? If it is, why was Reagan given a second landslide electoral victory? Why does the American public consistently give him high approval ratings?

No, the American people don’t want straight talk, they want happy talk--that’s what they put Ronald Reagan in the White House for. If Americans were interested in facing reality and dealing with this society’s problems and shortcomings, Reagan would be where he belongs-- permanently ensconced in his ranch house near Santa Barbara.
