A federal magistrate ruled today that alleged Nazi war criminal Andrija Artukovic may be extradited to face trial in Yugoslavia for mass murder but ordered that he not be removed from the United States until his attorneys have time to appeal.

U.S. Magistrate Volney Brown acted after more than an hour of arguments in which lawyers for the 85-year-old Artukovic contended that they had found evidence of fraud in documents submitted by the Yugoslav government and argued that the old man was virtually “a babbling idiot,” unable to understand the charges against him.
