Firefighters with water packs on their backs tramped through burning woodlands in Maine, digging up smoldering stumps and underground coals to put out a blaze that blackened more than 1,000 acres in five days. Logging vehicles loaded with water were moved into the woodlands for spot drenching of “hot spots,” and about 80 firefighters covered dozens of acres on foot, overturning earth with shovels and then extinguishing burning coals.
